Can I date someone who doesn't share my faith?
This one comes up all the time, usually from someone who already likes the person a lot. They're kind, funny, good to you, and they don't believe what you believe. Or they "respect it" but aren't interested.
"Don't be unequally yoked with unbelievers." 2 Corinthians 6:14 (WEB)
That's the verse everybody quotes. A yoke is what ties two animals together so they pull in the same direction. The point isn't that the other person is bad. The point is that marriage pulls you somewhere, and faith shapes where you're headed: how you spend money, raise kids, handle conflict, spend Sundays.
Questions to ask yourself honestly
- If they never come to faith, would I be okay with that for 40 years?
- Am I hiding parts of my faith so this works?
- Am I "missionary dating," hoping they'll change?
- Would I give the same advice to my younger sibling?
Some people end it here, and it hurts like any other breakup. That's okay. Doing the hard right thing still hurts. It just doesn't come with regret later.
