Why can't I stop thinking about my ex?
You're at the grocery store and their song comes on. You're fine, and then you're not. You catch yourself replaying the last conversation for the hundredth time, writing better lines for yourself.
That doesn't mean you're weak, and it doesn't mean you're supposed to go back. Your brain spent months or years building a life around this person. It doesn't get the memo overnight.
What actually helps
- Cut the feed. Mute or unfollow. Every time you check their stories you're starting the clock over.
- Name the loop. When the replay starts, say it out loud: "I'm doing the thing again." It sounds dumb. It works better than pretending you aren't.
- Move your body. Walk, lift, run, shoot hoops. Grief sits in your body too.
- Give the thoughts somewhere to go. Write the text you want to send. Then don't send it. Pray it instead.
- Don't do nights alone. Late nights are when the worst decisions get made. Line up a friend you can call.
For the guys
Nobody gave most of us a script for this. So we go quiet, work too much, drink a little more, and call it "fine." Telling one friend "I'm not okay" isn't soft. It's the strongest thing you'll do this month.
"He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds." Psalm 147:3 (WEB)
Healing is a process, not a switch. Some days will be better than others. That's normal.
